As they continue to preview their upcoming second album ‘Twentytwo in Blue’, New York City rockers Sunflower Bean deliver a politically charged message of defiance on ‘Crisis Fest’. Over super-slick guitars bristling with 70s swagger, Julia Cumming deplores the dire state of American politics. “2017 we know / reality’s just one big sick show / every day’s a crisis fest” she snarls, images of teenage anarchists springing to mind as she repeats her mantra to the Trumps of the world: “if you hold us back you know that we can shout / we brought you into this place, you know we can take you out”. And shout she does. For a band whose material to date has had a consistent, arty, ambiguity to it, ‘Crisis Fest’ is an unexpected stylistic shift and suggests that more great things from Sunflower Bean can be expected very soon.
